Gilgit–Baltistan Pakistan

Gilgit (Urdu: گلگت) is a mountain town in the Gilgit-Baltistan. Travelers exploring the Pakistani Himalayas or en route to or from China are almost definitely going to spend at least one night here. This makes it a great base to further research your trip, meet up with potential travel partners, or simply take a break. It's also a launching pad for climbers to nearby Rakaposhi.

Gilgit is just off the Karakoram Highway between Chilas and Karimabad, and most people arrive by road. The main bus stand is on the KKH - Karakoram Highway, and requires a taxi ride or shared jeep to reach from town. There are booking agents in town for long distance buses along the KKH. The journey from Islamabad can take as long as 24 hours.

The best season to visit is from May to mid October. The local dialect is Shina, however, Urdu and English are also spoken and understood.
Gilgit Airport (IATA: GIL) is small and has 45 minute flights to/ from Islamabad on PIA [1]. Due to extreme weather changes, flight delay or cancellation is a normal occurance.

Private vehicles are normally used as local transport. Renting jeeps is also a common way of moving around. You can go to nearby cities on buses and by air.

HISTORY
We have been slaves to Pakistan for the past 63 years. Earlier, we were slaves to the Dogras and the
Britishers for about one hundred years. Except this period of 150 years, the nation of Balawaristan
was never a slave to any one in its history. The slaveryhood was the result of our own negligence and
internal disputes. The basic cause of arrival of the Dogras and the Britishers was the enmity of Raja
Yasen Gohar Aman with the other local rulers. Gohar Aman and his uncle Suleman Shah with the
support of Yesen’s fighters ruled almost the entire areas of Gilgit Baltistan including Puniyal, Gilgit,
Nagar, some area of Baltistan, Astore, Chillas and Darel Tanger.

In Gohar Aman’s life, the Maharaja of Kashmir and the sikh army had suffered crushing defeat but
after three years of his death in 1863, due to the conspiracy by rulers of Punial, Gilgit Nagir and
Astore and non participation in battle against Sikhs by Mohbi Ali Khan, a strong ruler of Selgan area,
Yasen suffered defeat in fort of Moodoori and Azmat Shah S/O Raja Suleman Shah of Yasen was
made as ruler by the sikhs. The Sikhs mercilessly massacred the people in the Fort of Moodoori
in order to take revenge of Bhop Singh and his soldiers at the hands of Yasen’s soldiers in Bhop
Singh Padi near Gilgit in 1852. Later Mohbi Ali Khan and people of Selgan Yasen also withdrew their
support to Azmat Shah, which compelled him to flee towards Gilgit before the arrival of Sikhs to
Gilgit. Later, Sikhs signed an agreement with Yasen that they would not attack on Punial and Gilgit.
The agreement was also participated in by the rulers of Nagar and Chitral, but despite agreement,
Yesen again attacked Punial and Gilgit.

The ruler of Chitral, in order to punish Yasen for violation of agreement, sent his son Sardar Nizamul-Mulk to capture Yasen. Later he ruled the Yasen area for five years .In 1872, Raja Mirwali of Yasen,
killed colonel George Heward in Pharangbar of Derkot, Yasen. In 1895 the United Kingdom (UK) in
order to weaken Yasen, administratively divided the areas Mestoch (Chitral), Gupis and Ishkoman
from Yasen. After a fierce battle, the Britishers captured Nagir, while Hunza was surrendered
without war. The British continued their preparation of an attack on Darel Tanger. At that time, a
few fighters of Yasen were present there, as the areas of Chillas and Darel were almost ruled by
Yasen. When the Darel people killed the ruler of Yasen, the people of Yasen, strongly retaliated and
again appointed their own ruler there.

This kind of tension always prevailed there due to the lack of concept of combined rule in Sheen cast
of Chilas, Darel and Tangir. Each village had its own head. When Britishers attacked Darel Tangir, a
few fighters of Yasen resisted but failed to stop the British army. People of Darel Tangir, keeping in
view the situation avoided to resist and sought shelter on hill peaks. The Britishers easily conquered
Daral Tangir.

Earlier China, Russia and Afghanistan invaded this region on several occasions but local fighters
defeated them each time. In history, the region was under the occupation of china, Russia and
Afghanistan for a short period. Russians made fort is still intact of Bahrkohlti in Yasen, which is
dedicated to “Qalmag” nation of Russia. Taj Mughal, a ruler of Badakhshan (Afghanistan) also ruled
the area for a short period. But local people expelled all of them.
No country of the world could rule this region for a long period. Meanwhile the people residing
inside the present geographical boundaries of Pakistan were never the rulers in history. They were
ruled by others who occupied their land and gave them lands from their native lands in response of
their disloyalty against their motherland.

As for culture and civilization of Balawaristan and Pakistan is concerned, their seems utter
differences. Our emotions, dress, food and living style is quite different to that of Pakistan. Our face
resembles with the people of Iran, central Asian states and some countries of Europe. Our original
dress is limited to some rural area of Baltistan. Our diet is simple, like Europe, our music drum; flute
and dance are distinctive and have no resemblance in the whole world. Our women never dance,
only male folks dance. Dance is our hobby not a source of livelihood like that other region people of
paksitan . In our culture, we do not shake hand or embrace. We kiss each other’s hand with respect.
Our people are hospitable.

Anyone, If one wants to observe the behaviour of our people, he will find a clear difference between
the locals and the non locals in Gilgit and Baltistan. If you are looking for a taxi or Suzuki, you will
find the driver standing near his vehicle calmly. He will never cry in search of passengers like other
region people of Pakistan . After listening to you carefully, he will tell the genuine fare. Like a Pathan,
he is not habitual of bargaining. He will drop you at the right place. He will never deceive you like
that of Punjabi drivers. If you forget anything in the vehicle, the driver will try to trace you. Suppose
you go at a shop, you are a stranger. You cannot differentiate between Gilgiti and Pathan. You ask
the price, he will tell the price and keep quite.

You may try to bargain, but he would remain reluctant to his first price. You can leave the shop but
he will never call after. If you have come across with such a shopkeeper, be sure that he is Gilgiti. He
is local. He has told the genuine price in the very beginning. After that, you went to the next shop
and you have been told the price of same commodity ten times higher than the actual price. If you
asked for low rate, he will not lower the price, but when you step out of the shop, he will run after
you on the road and even finally sells his commodity much higher price, which was told by Gilgiti at
the previous shop..

It is an open fact that Pakistani rulers who pose to be the champions of Islam have brought
humiliation and disrespect to their country, but now some Pakistanis object, saying that prejudice
was shown with Pakistan, which was injustice. Some Pakistanis questioned as how Pakistan can be
declared No.2 instead of No.1 in Satanic Championship. Pakistan does not lack behind any country in
the field of evils. Government officials of the world including that of Muslim Arab countries express
their hatred on looking at the passport of Pakistan. Several Pakistanis have come to across with such
incidents during a journey, when a stranger friend travelling with them came to know about their
nationality, he felt uneasy and tried to avoid him.

I would like to speak about one more good quality of this beautiful region of Balawaristan(gilgit
baltistan). It is the only region where nobody is without home and no begger. Every resident possess
the property worth more than five or six lakh. There is no local beggar. ISI and non-local occupants
under a conspiracy have shifted ladies and children beggars from Punjab to our region, who are
destroying the environment of the region. They also work as informers for ISI. On the other hand,
Pathans and Kashghari girls are being used as workers to malign the great tradition and rites of this
great land.
